Delta State student-athletes compete in Gulf South Conference canned food drive

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Delta State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is collecting canned food and monetary donations for the Statesman's Shelf through Nov. 30 as part of a Gulf South Conference competition. The Statesmen football team kicked off Delta State's effort by donating 301 cans.

Drop off canned food donations at the Statesman's Shelf in Room 307 of the H.L. Nowell Student Union or in the donation box in the Union's first-floor lobby.

The drive runs Nov. 1-30, with participating schools collecting donations for food banks and pantries in their communities. Each can or dollar donated counts as one point, and the school with the most points at the end of the month wins. Schools submit their totals each Sunday, and the Gulf South Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee posts updated standings on Instagram each Monday.

The idea for the competition came out of a summer meeting of student-athlete representatives from across the conference, said Brady Roehm, a senior kicker from Hernando and vice president of Delta State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

"Since we have the Statesman's Shelf right on campus, which helps all our students, that's perfect. Let's work with them," Roehm said.

Each Delta State team plans to hold its own collection effort during November. All donations collected by Delta State will support the Statesman's Shelf, which provides nonperishable food and beverages to Delta State students, faculty and staff. The pantry keeps visits confidential and serves members of the campus community without requiring proof of need. During the 2024-25 academic year, the pantry recorded 899 visits and distributed 5,765 pounds of goods.

For more information, including pantry hours and how to make a monetary gift, visit the Statesman's Shelf website.
