Delta State University recognizes DSU Police Department and visiting linemen for storm response

CLEVELAND, Miss. - Delta State University is recognizing the outstanding response and cooperation shown by the Delta State University Police Department and dozens of utility linemen who converged on Bolivar County following the recent ice storm that severely impacted Cleveland and much of Mississippi.

The winter storm brought prolonged freezing rain, dangerous road conditions and widespread power outages across the Mississippi Delta and throughout the state. In Bolivar County, ice accumulation caused downed power lines, fallen trees, and extended electrical disruptions that affected homes, businesses and essential services. Utility crews faced hazardous conditions as they worked to restore power amid subfreezing temperatures and continuing weather challenges.

As part of the statewide restoration effort, Delta State University served as a staging location for Entergy Mississippi crews and mutual aid linemen from across the United States and Canada. Crews were stationed on campus as they worked around the clock to repair damaged infrastructure and restore electricity to the region.

Throughout the operation, officers with the Delta State University Police Department maintained a consistent presence at the staging site. Their efforts focused on safety, coordination and support for the visiting crews, while also ensuring the campus environment remained secure and welcoming.

DSU Police Sergeant Jonathan Johnson shared a firsthand account that captured the spirit of collaboration during the response. After conducting routine safety checks around the staging area, he entered the main tent and was greeted with warmth and camaraderie. He joined Entergy Emergency Coordinator Mike Evans for dinner and spent time speaking with linemen, answering questions, taking photographs and offering encouragement. Local restaurants like Backdraft, The Pharm, Lenny's Subs, Catfish Cabin and others provided free meals for the linemen throughout their time in Cleveland, as did Shane Rodgers of Shane's Seafood restaurants in Louisiana.

During these conversations, linemen repeatedly expressed their appreciation for Delta State University and for the DSU Police Department in particular. Many described the department as professional, helpful and exceptionally welcoming. Several workers noted that although they were far from home, including some who had traveled from Canada, they felt safe, supported, and treated like members of the Delta State family.

DSU Police officers also encouraged visiting crews to follow Delta State University on social media and share photos and experiences from their time on campus, further strengthening the connection between the university and those assisting the community during recovery.

Deputy Chief Christopher Williams of the Delta State University Police Department reflected on the service provided during the storm.

"Beyond the call of duty stands courage, commitment, and a selfless devotion to keeping others safe, shown through quiet sacrifices, unwavering integrity, and a steadfast willingness to serve when it matters most," Williams said.

Delta State University extends sincere gratitude to the DSU Police Department, Entergy Mississippi, and the many linemen and support personnel whose dedication and teamwork helped restore critical services and support the region during a challenging time.
